The grown-up girl's wardrobe guide

accreditation
I’m a great believer that your wardrobe should reflect your personal style, body shape and life stage.

Each new stage requires a few wardrobe changes to reflect that change.

If you are holding down a series corporate job, but your wardrobe is still filled with ripped jeans and cropped tops… it might be time for a change.

Change certainly doesn’t mean boring. I often find that women think in extremes.

For fear of looking like mutton dressed as lamb, they go for the fuddy duddy look or in wanting to be taken seriously at work, they wear very masculine clothing without even the slightest hint of femininity.

Instead of going to extremes of change, here are a few guidelines to creating a wardrobe that accurately reflects who you are now:

Quality versus quantity:

Women often buy wide range of cheaper items, when a few good quality pieces that can be mixed and matched would work much better.

This may consist of a good pair of jeans, classic jacket that goes with most of your wardrobe, a dress that can be dressed up or down etc. When you are clear of what suits your body shape and lifestyle, this is easy to do.

Fashion up your look:

If you have a good basic wardrobe, you can simply add a few fun fashion pieces to update your look. Have fun with colour, print and accessories here.

A killer pair of red heels could brighten up your look or a printed dress that shows off curves may be just the umph your wardrobe needs.

Comfort and style:

Our clothing needs to support us in the roles we play. If something is uncomfortable, you are less likely to wear it often. With stretch fabrics, comfort and style are easy to achieve.  Be picky about the shoes you buy.

If you can only stand in them for 10 minutes and you are on your feet most of the day, the shoes are not a good buy. You can achieve practicality and look good at the same time.

Versatility:

Your wardrobe needs to suit your lifestyle. If you are a mom who works from home, your wardrobe needs are going to differ from the woman who works in a corporate and travels frequently.

Give some thought to what your lifestyle consists of and plan your wardrobe accordingly.

Personal style:

Your wardrobe needs to reflect who you are. If you are creative, add colour and print that speaks of your creativity or if you prefer structure, make sure most of your wardrobe consists of clean simple lines with few details.

There are no absolute rules. Each woman is an individual and her wardrobe should reflect that. Have fun with it and avoid anything in extremes.
