The latest in massive Photoshop fails

Photoshop has, sadly, become the 'corrective' tool of our era. It is used daily to 'perfect' women's bodies - making them thinner, giving them bigger breasts or flawless skin. Yet, this seemingly 'perfect' body is only a manufactured reality of what women actually look like.

After Aussie model, Meaghan Kausman first saw the pics from her recent swimwear shoot for Fella Swim's, snapped by photographer Pip Summerville, she was shocked at her 'new' appearance and decided to take to Instagram. The Instagram image shows one original and another after it was heavily retouched by the swimwear brand who commissioned the shoot.

Kausman captioned the picture saying:

"Making art is my passion. Creating beautiful photos and meeting inspiring people has really given me a new lease on life. I recently did a photoshoot wearing Fella Swim, with an extremely passionate and talented underwater photographer, Pip, @seagypsea_photography Her photos are magical; they capture women in water and celebrate their beauty. This morning I was extremely shocked to see that Fella Swim had uploaded a photoshopped version of Pip’s original photo to their Instagram page. They had drastically altered my body, thinning out my stomach and thighs in an attempt to box me in to the cultural ideal of beauty. Above is their version, below is the real version. My body is a size 8, not a size 4. That’s my body! I refuse to stand by and allow ANY company or person to perpetuate the belief that “thinner is better”. All women are beautiful, and we come in different shapes and sizes! This industry is crazy!!!! It is NOT OKAY to alter a woman’s body to make it look thinner. EVER!"

The company's art team gave Meaghan a brand new stomach and a tiny size 6 bum. Her size 8 bum was obviously just too ridiculously big that it simply had to be chopped off, right? WRONG.

The company has since apologised for this 'faux pas', yet both Kausman and Summerville decided to speak out, confronting the culture which constantly tells us that 'thin is better'.

It is perfectly fine when you are healthy and thin, but telling people that thin is always best above anything else, is just preposterous. No one should be unhealthily skinny or fat, but there's nothing wrong with being curvy.

Kausman's body language-expert father, Dr. Rick Kausman responded to this controversy saying that Photoshopping bodies is, in a way, like death by a thousand paper cuts. It's slow, but it kills eventually.
