What to wear to a wedding

Weddings are a wonderful time of celebration, but can cause you some anxiety if you think you have nothing to wear.  Here are a few tips to putting your fabulous outfit together with ease.

How to plan your outfit: Before you rush out to the mall and spend a lot of money on a dress you will never wear again, consider the following:

- Is there a dress code? Read your invitation carefully to see if a dress code is specified. If you are uncertain and you know the wedding party well enough, ask them.

It’s better to ask than suffer embarrassment of wearing the wrong thing.

- What look do you want to create?  A special occasion is a wonderful opportunity to wear something you wouldn’t necessarily wear every day.

Give some thought to what makes you feel fabulous.

- Shop your own wardrobe first. It’s a great idea to have an suitable outfit for special occasion in your wardrobe.

If you don’t, you may have a dress you can style up with the right accessories or a statement skirt you can pair with a simple top.

If you have nothing of the sort and need to purchase something, look out for something you can easily wear again.

What to avoid wearing: These guidelines will apply for most weddings. Of course, there are the exceptions, so use your discretion.

- Don’t wear a white dress. This is the bride’s day, let her shine.  If you know the bride is not wearing white, then this rule doesn’t apply.

- Avoid wearing all black. I know, you love wearing black, but this is a day to play with some colour.

- Don’t wear jeans unless it’s a picnic wedding or something along those lines. Guys can get away with wearing smart jeans, a tailored shirt and jacket, but girls, it’s time to dress up a little.

Stylish outfit ideas:

- A fabulous dress: I love dresses. They are so comfortable to wear and look gorgeous if you find the right fit.The most flattering fit for most shapes are styles that fit in the waist and flair at the hem.

They offer a lot more balance than those that narrow at the hem. A flared hem makes your hips, tum and bum look smaller.

If you are happy to show your legs, go for a dress above the knee, if not, opt for a dress that ends just below your knee or full length.  ¾ lengths tend to make your legs look shorter and hips look wider.

- A statement skirt: A bold colour or printed skirt can easily be paired with a simple top.

If you want to embrace the romance of a wedding, try a volumous skirt, but make sure that it fits well in the waist and flairs at the hip to avoid adding extra bulk to your tummy area or wear a tucked in fitted top to balance the look.

- Feminine trousers: Trousers can look very dressy if worn correctly. You can either go for the very tailored tuxedo look, soft and flowing or a combination of both.

If you wear flowing trousers, make sure you pair it with a fitted blouse or top. A flowing top and trousers will make you lose shape.

For example, a pair of soft wideleg trousers with a fitted cropped jacket and a pair of heels will look elegant and romantic at the same time.
