Give your home an edge with these eclectic DIY ideas

accreditation
Eclecticism is about contrast and variety, taking elements you like from different periods of time and interior design styles and melding them together in one space.

The wonderful thing about eclectic interiors is that they tend to be strongly individualistic representations of the personality of the decorator.

They are often fun, especially creative, and charming.

Mindful mixing

It’s hard to talk about norms since there are almost limitless combinations that can make up an eclectic room.

An eclectic interior design should not however be mistaken for an 'anything goes' approach – you need to find the right balance of different elements otherwise the room will just look a mess.

With each item you like and are considering adding to the mix, you need to ask yourself: will it blend with the other elements in the room? There needs to be a thoughtful connection between all the various pieces.

A few guidelines

Here are a few ideas to get you started in thinking about your eclectic room – these are elements that are common to many eclectic rooms, but are far from being ‘rules’:

-          Utilise 2 or 3 different interior design styles for best effect – too many styles and the look might well come across as chaotic and undesigned

-          Embrace colour, but it’s probably best to keep one or two neutrals as base colours

-          Mix your furniture styles

-          Make use of varied textures and form

-          Incorporate fabric into the design

-          Insert interesting artwork (from paintings and prints to sculptures, vases and knickknacks) to help bring out your unique viewpoint.

Having said all that, when designing your space take chances, be bold, and go with your instinct. The most important thing at the end of the day is that your home works for you, both from a functional and an aesthetic point of view.

The rooms needs to lift your spirit and be your sanctuary or happy place.

Happy decorating!
