Follow our steps to make your own dainty doily. You can give it as a gift or use it as an embellishment on décor or fashion accessories.
Each round of the doily is worked in a different stitch pattern. you can make smaller doilies by working fewer rounds, if you prefer. Remember that for every round it is necessary to work the appropriate turning chain to create the height of the first stitch. all rounds are completed with a slip stitch. Place a marker at the end of every round so you can distinguish the stitch patterns. When you work in rounds you may need to work more patterns if your tension is tight and the doily starts to curl up, or fewer patterns if your work starts to create a wavy effect.
1 Work a length of eight chain stitches and join with a slip stitch to make a ring. For the first round, work two half treble stitches for every chain stitch; work the half treble into the centre of the ring, not the stitch, and don’t turn the work when you have finished the last stitch. Join the last stitch to the first stitch with a slip stitch to complete the first round.
2 Work one chain stitch for the turning chain. Work one double crochet stitch into the second half treble from the previous round, work three chain stitches. Continue working in this sequence of one double crochet into every alternate half treble and three chain stitches to the end of the round. This round forms an open pattern.
3 For the third round, work three chain stitches for the turning chain. Now work three treble stitches into the first space of the previous round, work two chain stitches. Continue in this pattern sequence until the round is completed.
4 The fourth round is worked in the same way as the third round, except every group of treble stitches is followed by three chain stitches. This extra chain stitch in the pattern will increase the size of the open space and will also keep the doily flat.
5 For the fifth round, start by working two treble stitches into the open space of the previous round and then work a treble stitch into every treble stitch of the group of the previous round. The finished round produces a tighter, more closed pattern than before.
6 The sixth round is worked in half treble stitch. Work a sequence of two half treble stitches, three chain stitches throughout the round. You can place the half treble stitches into the pattern group or the chain spaces of the previous round.
7 This round has a pretty scalloped pattern. It is easy to work, but you may need to practise the stitch pattern a few times. Into every open space of the previous round, work one scallop pattern; this pattern is worked in double treble stitch and there are seven stitches in every scallop. Work the first stitch as tightly as you can, then each following stitch slightly looser until the fourth stitch is worked. This is the centre stitch of the scallop. Work each stitch tighter from the fifth stitch to the seventh stitch to complete the scallop. No chain stitches are required before working the next scallop pattern. Continue making scallops until the seventh round is completed.
8 To make the doily larger, the next round has to be worked in an open pattern again. Work a sequence of four chain stitches, one treble stitch, one chain stitch followed by one treble stitch, throughout the round. Work another open round by working one treble stitch into every space, and between the two treble stitches of the previous round. Each treble stitch must be followed by three chain stitches. Complete the open effect by working yet another open round, this time working in double crochet and following a sequence of one double crochet stitch into every space, followed by four chain stitches.
9 The next round (11th round) is worked in a scallop pattern in the same way as the seventh round. Complete the doily by working a round of double crochet stitch in a sequence of two chain stitches, one double crochet stitch. Work this sequence into every scallop three times. This will produce a pretty lace pattern that exaggerates the scallop design. Fasten off and darn in the loose ends
