Make your own ceiling rose mirror

accreditation

DAS recently had the honour of having its 530 Diameter ceiling rose used in a great DIY project: the making of a feature mirror.

The end product is striking and attractive, and we hope that many more of you will be inspired to take up a similar project!

The ceiling rose was kindly supplied by
Das Products.

The article, Easy DIY mirror with ceiling rose by Janice Anderssen, was posted on easyDIY.co.za, and they have agreed to let us share it with our readers.

Use a ceiling rose to make a framed mirror that you can hang on a wall to create a feature or add to a wall gallery.

You will need:
Plaster or Polystyrene ceiling rose
Circular mirror cut to size
Craft knife
Solvent-free glue
Acrylic or water-based paint
Paintbrush
Hot glue gun
Rope, string or braid to finish

*You can have your mirror cut to any size by a glass/mirror supplier.

Method:
1.
You want the mirror to sit as flat and stable as possible on the surface of the rose ceiling. Use a craft knife to remove any raised detail.

2.
The ceiling rose we used had quite a bit of raised detail. Use the mirror to mark on the ceiling rose how much needs to be removed.

3. Continue to use a sharp craft knife to remove as much detail as possible so that the mirror sits as flat as possible.

IMPORTANT:

Don't remove too much - you still need to allow a border on which to mount the mirror.

4. Paint the mirror with acrylic or water-based craft paint. You can't use spray paints or oil-based paints, as these dissolve the polystyrene, but you can use these on plaster ceiling roses. You will need to apply 2 to 3 coats of paint for a nice smooth finish.

5.
To attach the mirror securely to the top of the ceiling rose use solvent-free glue. This type of glue won't dissolve the polystyrene. Leave overnight to let the glue set.

6.
To hide the edge of the mirror you can use rope, string or braid. For our project we use a hot glue gun to stick rope around the mirror and also around the edge of the ceiling rose.

IMPORTANT:
Cut the rope edges at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors, so that when you glue together the join is almost invisible.

You can paint the ceiling rose mirror in your colour of choice to match your existing decor, or to create a stand out feature on a wall.

Polystyrene is very lightweight and we mounted our ceiling rose mirror onto the wall with Prestik. For a plaster rose you should use Pattex No More Nails double-sided tape, or add a picture hanger.
