The Ford Fiesta ST brings out the hooligan in you

The new Fiesta ST is Ford’s fastest and most dynamic small production performance car and is coveted by many.

When Dave Fall, who looks after the Ford fleet in Cape Town, came to collect the car after a week’s test drive he asked me if I had left anything in the car. ‘Just my heart,’ I said.

You can’t help falling in love with this sassy, nippy, three door  hatchback, which has been tuned by the Ford Team so that the powertrain, suspension steering and brakes give optimised driving dynamics.

Features normally only found in larger performance cars. If you think you don’t need that kind of performance believe me once you have driven the ST you will know you can’t live without it.

As you slip into the formula one type bucket seats you have a personality change.

The formula one experience - you slide deep into the bucket seats of the Ford Fiesta ST

It’s not just the fact that the car can go from 0 to 100 in 6.9 seconds (I’m not a scientist but there is a G force involved.)

It’s about the roadholding, the traction and if that is your wont, a top speed of 220km/hour.
What’s to like?

It sounds like a sports car, looks like a sports car and handles like one.  For petrol heads the Symposer creates a symphony of sound  - a distinctive roar which sets the car apart.

Not convinced?  Proof is in the head turning. It takes a special kind of car to get a reaction from fellow motorists and the ST proved a ‘look at me’ (and listen to me)  at traffic lights and on the road.  It’s a serious head swiveller.

And it has all the bells and whistles.  A Sony Audio system with 8 speakers, SYNC with Bluetooth and voice control, steering mounted audio controls, rake and reach adjustment steering, cruise control and EcoMode.

Speaking of which, the Fiesta, although it has 20% more power than the first generation Fiesta, still remains fuel efficient using an average of 5.9l/100km.

Safety remains paramount.  The Ford ST has been awarded a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating and includes 7 airbags consisting of dual front airbags, dual side and curtain airbags and driver knee airbag.

The fiesta is not only fitted with a tyre deflation detection system but has a full size spare wheel.
What’s not to like?

Not much. But if I have to… the seatbelts (as in most three door cars) are set quite far back which means a little chiropractic rearrangement is required to twist round and get hold of them.

That said, the ST is for a younger market where they still go out more than their back does.

There have also been comments about the space in the rear seats.  I was not giving up my spot behind the steering wheel to find out! That said, my experience is that there always has to be some compromise in a three door car.

Is the Ford Fiesta 1.6 ST a girls’ car?  Absolutely. I am still finding it hard to wipe the grin from my face…

The new ST is priced at R254 900 and is available with a fully comprehensive four-year or 120 000km warranty and four-year or 60 000km service plan. Service intervals 20 000km.
