The new Honda Accord - reaching another level

If the new Honda Jet launched in June 2014 is ($4 million dollars a pop) is not suited to your pocket, then the new Honda Accord certainly is.

And not just your pocket. Honda buyer’s expectations will be exceeded with this dynamic and luxurious sedan.

As South African sales and marketing boss, Graham Eagle, says, “They’ll be more than happy that the latest Accord has elevated its sense of luxury and craftsmanship, vehicle dynamics and range of standard equipment to class-leading levels.”

I’m sure if you asked Asimo, Honda’s much loved and most advanced humanoid robot, he would spontaneously give you exactly the same answer.

It’s not surprising that the loyalty amongst Honda buyers is as strong as between man and his (four legged friend) best friend.

The motoring journos were pretty impressed too.

The new Honda Accord was launched from the One and Only, where Eagle gave us a heads up on the changes to the new Accord.

The launch presentation of the classy trio was at One & Only hotel in Cape Town’s Waterfront where gave us a head’s up on the Honda Accord 2.0 Elegance, Honda Accord 2.4 Executive and my personal favourite the Honda Accord 3.5 V6 Exclusive.

An American design (changed from the previously European one) and assembled in Thailand, the Accord has enough history and kudos to be stand up and be very much counted. And this one is bigger, better and even more luxurious than previously.

Eagle says that 10 million of them have been sold in the cars 38 year history and the range has become the brands’ best seller.

Honda lovers slavishly return to their favourite brand.

We like: The huge amount of space. The rear seat has the kind of er… leg room which would have prompted parents of teenagers to initiate a conversation about the birds and the bees forty years ago. Just before a trip to the drive in….

In fact three adults could fit very comfortably in the rear seat.

And of course a girl likes her gadgetry.

Parking sensors at both ends, a rear view camera and (you can see a bit of favouritism here) the Exclusive boasts adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and a my personal favourite a eenzy weensy camera in the passenger side mirror that shows you (on the centre display) exactly what's coming up on the blind side, as soon as you switch on the left indicator.

Bloody brilliant I’d say. The only sound in our car was the gentle bantering of male vs. female about... What else? Directions.

The Accord gives more expensive, more badged sedans a serious run for their money in terms of rubber soled, butler shoes quiet.

All the new Accord models have active noise cancellation that use two microphones in the headlining, a signal processor and the Accord’s audio speakers to cancel unwanted exterior sounds such as wind, road and tyre noise.

There was a kind of hush all over the world as we devoured the miles along the West Coast to Malmesbury through Paarl and to the magnificent Rosca restaurant in Franschoek.

The loyal Honda drivers are going to love the increased luxury, craftsmanship, vehicle dynamics and yes, the sportiness of the new Honda Accord.

And there is no doubt there is going to be a whole new cult following in the future.

These include a three-year or 100 000km warranty and a five-year or 90 000km service plan for four-cylinder models, and a five-year or 100 000km service plan for the V6 - that's because the V6's service intervals are 10 000km, whereas the fours can go 15 000km before they need TLC.
