I received a press release earlier this week about one of VW South Africa’s latest projects – restoring the ‘last Beetle’ ever built in its manufacturing plant in Uitenhage – finally being completed, after it was almost completely destroyed in a vehicle carrier accident a few years ago.
Nostalgia hit.
You see, unlike the new-age ‘fashionable’ models with their high-tech specs and what-not, this real Beetle embodies rather modest ‘luxury’ features (for example, a built-in cigarette lighter) as my 1970s-something 1600.
It was given to me by my mother when I passed my driver’s licence at the tender age of 19, and if I think back and consider what a gem this car actually is, I can kick myself for reselling it.
Apart from the memories, I can say in complete honesty that my road sense and ‘skills’ are not because I’ve been doing it for almost a decade. Nooooo... My good driving today is thanks to my Beetle.
What was the first car you owned, and what memories do you have of it?
