Here are a few ideas for different “types” of mothers, the Competitive mom, the theatrical mom, the foodie mom and the DIY mom.
These are not the only “types” of moms out there but this is a great place to start.
1. The Arty Mom
South Africa’s arts scene is rich and diverse; your mom is absolutely spoilt for choice. If she is an artist herself, a clean canvas and new paintbrushes will have her ready to create her next masterpiece.
As an artist, she must have a love and appreciation for other artists’ work. Get her tickets for an upcoming exhibition. If you are based in Pretoria, a great exhibition to visit will be “Where Light Meets the brush” starting from the 29th of May. This exhibition will feature artists like Corne van Eck who is a successful and imaginative artist, a beacon of the Pretoria arts environment.
2. The DIH (Do-It-Herself) Mom
Your mom’s approach to life and everything in between is very hands-on, literally. She loves to create with her hands and DIY is her outlet. Give her a challenge and get her new supplies from a new glue gun, every Do-it-yourselfers favourite tool, to ribbon and buttons.
Challenge her with a new project like fixing an old trunk, or creating storage shelves or a magazine rack for your room.
3. The Foodie Mom
Your mom is a culinary expert, both with cooking and tasting. Treat her to a new taste experience at a restaurant specializing in international cuisine, such a VickyChristina’s in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Spanish food is the order of the day at these great restaurants.
Perhaps this new taste experience will inspire her in the kitchen. Introduce a new and exciting ingredient to her, such as Bedouin Café & Deli’s range of labneh cheeses. 4. The Adventurous Mom

Perhaps experiencing the world’s highest commercial bungee jumping bridge, located near Nature’s Valley in the Western Cape, will do the trick. Face Adrenalin takes you bungee jumping over the Bloukrans River and is sure to leave your mom feeling good.
Take the time to understand the type of woman you mother is, and treat her with what you know she will love this Mother’s day.
