Why Hong Kong is a must-go holiday destination

In my first five minutes in Hong Kong, I immediately knew that I was somewhere special.

I dashed to find the nearest bathroom, as all women do after disembarking a plane, and as soon as stood up, the toilet flushed itself.

I was so flabbergasted, a squatted over the loo for a second time just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

Now maybe it’s because I not used to sensory technology (I don’t even have a touch screen phone) but if self-flushing toilets were an indication of what to expect on my trip, I was in for an incredible adventure.

There are two main reasons Hong Kong was my destination of choice, first because you don’t need a visa to get into the country and second, the Hong Kong dollar is virtually one for one with the rand, give or take a couple of cents.

This means that there was no visa drama prior to my trip and no annoying calculations to do when managing my finances.

Hong Kong is high. There are no words to describe how high it is. The City is a sea of skyscrapers and you often find yourself looking up at the sheer height of the buildings. This is because the land is so limited and the population so dense, the only way to accommodate everyone is to build up.

The city is buzzing with activity, and you find yourself being swooped up by the fast pace, which is good because it helps you see more of the city. The subway and trams provide perfect, easily accessed transport for you to go all over, including to Disney Land Hong Kong, which everyone should go to regardless of age.

Hong Kong is part of China (minus the communism) and we all know everything is made in China. So what better place to go shopping that in the land of origins itself? There are night markets everywhere, where you can anything and everything you want, and, it’s cheap!

It’s best to pack little to know clothes on your way there so you have more space for all your purchases. Word of warning, not all merchants in the night markets is open to negotiating. Pick your battles carefully, and if you succeed you can score amazing bargains.

Food can be tricky. I don’t mean tricky in the sense that you may end up eating a dog. I mean that there are so many places to eat that it is difficult to choose where to go. I found that the more foreigners are at a restaurant, the pricier it would be.

I took to following the locals to see where they eat. Their choices led me to affordable places with great food. Although it is difficult to read the menus, there are pictures that can help you order.

But the best thing about Hong Kong by far is the incredible the largest laser light show that happens every night at 8pm.

Over 40 buildings in the Hong Kong skyline take part in this ‘symphony of lights’ that is best viewed on Hong Kong’s own walk of fame, that sports an amazing statue of movie legend Bruce Lee and stars for actors Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-Fat and Ken Wantanbe.

For a real city experience with an exciting twist, Hong Kong is a must-go holiday destination!
