Selena Gomez grew up in the spotlight. She’s been acting since she was 10 and has been in a couple of pageants too. Maybe that’s why the people at V magazine decided to dress her as a an older, half-naked version of a Toddlers & Tiaras contestant.
According to Channel24, many people on social media have actually compared the pictures from the shoot to Lolita and have expressed how uncomfortable it makes them feel.
And I totally get why.
She might be 22, but they deliberately try to make her look younger.
Her makeup is kept to a minimal. We assume this is to emphasise her youth. In one picture, she wears a cute little polka-dot bow in her hair and big red hoop earrings while looking at you with big doe eyes and wearing some sort of denim underwear.
In another, she’s clad in a check bikini and wears a cowboy hat reminiscent of the little girls in the aforementioned pageant reality TV show who often wear them in the talent section. Her big, curly hair. The flowers on the bikini top and on her earrings. The combination is basically the creepiest one ever.
Why would a magazine want to glamorise the sexualisation of children?
And Selena seems to be unfazed by the negative feedback, sharing pictures from the shoot on her Instagram and seeming very excited.
