But sometimes people get so worked up and upset that the fake drama breaks into real emotion - and the results are just glorious.
There have been many, many meltdowns (seriously, there hundreds of reality shows out there), so we have picked our favourites. Some are heartfelt, some are ridiculous, but all of them made for some incredible television.
1. Alexis Neiers was not wearing 6 inch Louboutins!
Remember the rich kids of the Bling Ring who robbed celebrity houses? Well E! aired a show called Pretty Wild, featuring Alexis Neiers, one of the accused. When an article misrepresents her, she gets very upset, and you can't help but laugh.
All she wants is the world to know her side of the story - and that she was wearing little brown kitten heels to court.

2. How dare she ruin the party by buying her daughter a car?
So basically all of the Super Sweet 16 kids are spoiled, demanding and have way too much money for their own good. But when it comes to being the biggest brat, Audrey takes the cake. Instead of being happy to get a brand new car for a present, all she does is complain and whine. Someone should have told her that getting an expensive gift is a good thing - no matter the timing.
3. The X Factor water throw down
We have all seen our fair share of upset contestants, after judges tell them they just don't have it. They cry, beg or scream and who can blame them? Their dreams have just been crushed. Debbie Stevens's reaction was to get some watery revenge - too bad Louis Walsh saw it coming...
4. Meat Loaf just loses it on Celebrity Apprentice
The Apprentice is a very stressful show to be on, and no one knows that better than Meat Loaf. A few stolen art supplies was enough to unleash his fury. You know it's serious when Lil' Jon has to hold you back.
5. The meltdown that spawned a thousand memes
The show Intervention had some hectically emotional moments, but the one that will always be remembered happened on the episode featuring former boxer Rocky Lockridge. In it we see the best cry ever. So many auto tune remixes. So many memes. Years later it is still the best (and funniest) cry the world has ever seen.
6. The most epic mic drop in history
This X Factor contestant does not respond well to criticism at all. Not only does she fling her mic, she storms back onto the stage and just lets loose. All the drama begins 3 minutes in.
7.The legendary meltdown of Tyra Banks
No meltdown list is complete without this glorious, heart-wrenching moment on America’s Next Top model. We were all rooting for Tyra after she laid down some truth.
