Annalise Keating – How To Get Away With Murder
The tough as nails, no nonsense defense attorney/law professor is one amazing character. You get to see the hardworking woman who works the court room like a boss, the vulnerable woman who cries because of the issues in her life, and the diva who knows what she wants.

Cookie – Empire
I’ve just begun watching this show, but already Cookie is my favourite. She gets out of prison after 17 years and immediately starts working to get what she wants and what she feels she’s owed. She’s estranged from her family, her ex-husband keeps pushing her down, and she’s got to prove that she’s more than just a jail bird looking for a payout. But, she keeps her head above water and works it.

Michonne – Walking Dead
She kept two zombies on chains with her to protect from the other undead and uses a katana to slice through walkers in her way. While we don’t know much about the mysterious Michonne, we do know that she doesn’t let anything stand in her way; undead or alive, and she’s fiercely loyal to the other members of her new-found family.

Danaerys – Game Of Thrones
When we first meet Dany, she seems like another feeble, meek little girl who has been forced into a marriage with a bad man and can do nothing for herself. But her marriage to Khal Drogo, as well as the support of the Dothraki people, eventually gives her the strength and confidence to lead while trying to take back her rightful title of Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. And, boy, does she do some ass-kicking on the way.

Olivia Pope – Scandal
Olivia can fix anything. Seriously, she gets paid to handle a crisis. And not only does she do it rather well, she does it in style. This woman’s fashion sense will have you wanting to bankrupt yourself to copy her many great looks. Her personal life isn’t always so squeaky clean, or as easy to fix, but she perseveres by being her awesome, intelligent self.

Sophia Burset – Orange is The New Black
Possibly one of the most important characters on TV right now, Sophia is a transgender woman who ended up in Litchfield Prison because she stole credit cards in order to pay for her sex-reassignment surgeries. She has to deal not only with being the only trans person in the prison, but also with the transphobia and misogyny from both the inmates and staff. And yet, she knows how to get what she wants when she wants it. She provides an important look into the life of trans people everywhere and the fact that she’s actually played by a trans actress, makes this even better.

Mindy Lahiri – The Mindy Project
If you love Bridget Jones, chances are, you’ll love Mindy. While she isn’t as silly and (let’s face it) pathetic as Bridget, her love life can be quite disastrous and she handles it in the best way possible – with laughter. She’s also really bloody good at her job, even when it means battling with her male colleagues. She’s successful, fabulously stylish, talented, and funny. What a great combination.

The Dowager Countess – Downton Abbey
I think Violet Crawley is possibly one of my favourite female characters of all time, and very nearly my favourite on this list. The no-nonsense matriarch of the Crawley family has the best one-liners – the kind that will have you giggling at her dry wit like a loon. She shows that older characters can still be funny, wise and bad ass.
