The Real Housewives of Jozi is actually a thing

accreditation

The Real Housewives series is getting a local and lekker makeover with 5 women from the Johannesburg area who will be showing off how great being a rich woman in SA really is.

I don’t know about you, but I’m kind of over reality TV, especially the Real Housewives series. I just don’t get it. If I wanted to be reminded how broke I am, I would stare at my bank statement for an hour.

According to TimesLive, the show will air next year and the cast is as follows:

Aimee Sadie
A single, part-time model, entrepreneur and fashion buyer who also runs a family owned boutique in Sandton. (Erm, how is she a housewife if she’s single with a full-time job? )

Puleng Mash Spies
Was featured on an episode of Come Dine With Me SA and, according to her website, “is a mother of two who revels in family time, looking gorgeous (thanks to Hermes, Kingsley Heath and Chistian Louboutin), entertaining and laughing out loud.”

Sorisha Naidoo
A businesswoman and radio presenter who also had a short stint on the TV show, Scandal!. She’s married to one of SA’s most successful businessmen, Vivian Reddy, and has two children with him. (Seriously, have we missed the new definition of housewife?)

Christie Swanepoel
The CEO and director at Energy for Work, a recruitment company, and is a divorced mother of two. (See above)

Nazli Delport
An image consultant and marketing manager for two of Jozi’s hottest nightclubs, Hush and Kong.

And while these ladies are probably lovely, and will be very entertaining, I still wonder why these kinds of shows would be okay in a country where just over 20% of the population live in extreme poverty.

Is it because we have this massive aspirational culture? We want to be better therefore we need to see people who are doing better than ourselves to reach that goal?

Or is it simply a case of escaping from the humdrum of everyday living by tuning into a show and watching rich women parade all their fancy things?

I don’t know, but I doubt I’ll be watching. Will you?
