Over the last two years a surprising amount of women have created conceptual and fine art and craft with their reproductive systems.
Just as chefs are making ice creams and cheeses with breast milk, artists have been doing everything from knitting scarves, to plopping paint-filled eggs, to making necklaces from their vaginas.
The latest artist to use her body as a tool, Jen Lewis, told Buzzfeed that she wants to normalise periods through her project, and who wants to argue with that?
Her work consists of a series of photographs of the intricate patterns menstrual blood makes when dropped in water. Like I said, quite pretty.

The only thing that confused me a bit, is that her husband took the pictures. Doesn’t that make him the artist then? (It’s clear my grasp of postmodern art is frail at best, isn’t it?)
I think it’s pretty cool. I mean, it’s organic, it’s biodegradable, it’s free… Although one would be forced to wait for your period to arrive which might detract from the immediacy of artistic inspiration.
The most important thing this story raises for me, is the fact that she got inspired when she started using the mooncup. Don’t you think we need to talk about the mooncup more? Seriously, this gadget does not get enough airtime.
It’s safer, much cheaper, and infinitely greener than the other alternatives, and yet so few of us use them. Why don’t we? What’s up with that? Do you? Tell me in the comment section, I really think this should be more of a thing.
But back to the art – what do you think?
