Fox News jokes about Ray Rice abuse video

Fox News has outdone itself.

Recently, TMZ leaked a video that revealed the abuse NFL player Ray Rice inflicted on his then-fiancé, now wife Janay Palmer in an elevator.

In the video, Rice punches Palmer twice, the second time knocking her unconscious.

During the opinion talk-show Fox and Friends, the hosts joke about the “message” to take away from this incident.

“I think the message is take the stairs,” is host Steve Doocy’s contribution.

“The message is, when you’re in an elevator, there’s a camera.” Smirks co-host Brian Kilmeade, while co-host Anna Kooiman smiles and laughs.

Together you have the combined wisdom from Fox & Friends: Women should take the stairs because if they don’t, they might be abused, and men who want to abuse women should remember that they must be careful not to get caught doing it.

Thanks, Fox.

When the incident originally occurred in February, all that was known was that Rice pulled Palmer’s unconscious body from the elevator. After an enquiry, Rice was originally suspended from two games, a punishment that caused uproar as it was considering far too lenient, particularly when compared to the lengthy bans issued for marijuana use.

The new video has caused a resurge of this outrage along with demands that Rice’s crime of domestic violence be taken seriously. Rice has since been indefinitely suspended by the NFL.

Meanwhile, rampant victim blaming and a display of ignorance about domestic violence has lead to two very powerful hashtags trending on Twitter: #whyistayed and #whyileft, where survivors of domestic violence share their experiences and explain what it’s like to be caught in such a situation.
