I’m sure you’ve come across more than one social media picture, captioned: “Yet another awful day in Africa” or "Just another horrible day in Africa". Snaps are shared from various locations that can only be classified as extraordinary, lush and undoubtedly luxe. Often a view from a balcony overlooking a stunning beach or someone sitting poolside, sipping on a daiquiri. It is intended as a sarcastic comment, playing on the fact that the world in large part still sees “Africa” as one country. A country, that is backwards, poor and underdeveloped – with the odd lion strutting proudly about town. As they do down Sea Point promenade.
Thing is, in large part, the harsh reality is still true for most.
Enjoying your December holiday in Berlin or road tripping up the East Coast or having a humble “staycation” jam-packed with dining out experiences on Bree Street and pricey G&T's on Camps Bay’s main road is something some have never experienced. The concept of taking time out to relax, to have time to yourself with fewer or no worries is an idea so far removed from the poor and underprivileged lives most are still forced to lead in South Africa, or Africa as a whole (continent, not country). This obviously applies to many "underdeveloped" countries across the world.
