People who announce how much weight they've lost bore me

accreditation
This is a readers response to Lili Radloff's column, What is boredom really?

I had to laugh at your multi-tasking, which included vacuuming while reading. I iron while watching Come Dine With Me and feel like it is a very good use of time.

There are some things in life that cannot be made interesting no matter how much effort you put into it. Like dealing with a call centre. Stating your issue numerous times, listening to the same music while you are put on hold and being told repeatedly that your call is important to the company. Repeat sequence again. Not fun.

But the thing I cannot summon enthusiasm for right now is the Banting bandwagon. If I have to sit through another, “I gave up carbs and lost X kgs” speech, I may lose my last shred of patience.

Explorers have discovered new continents with more modesty than some people who have parted with pasta. I’ve lost hours (feels more like years) listening to some over-zealous fans of this diet tell me their stories.

Some carry on as if they have cured world hunger/hiked Mount Everest without oxygen/promoted world peace when in fact they have actually just lost weight.

I never thought that shedding kilograms was of such monumental importance that one person has had to constantly tell me, “People walk right past me because they don’t recognise me. Because I've lost so much with Banting”. In reality, I think they just want to be saved listening to a session on the "evils" of rice.

I also don't understand how it is acceptable to walk around announcing how many kilograms you are down and how much fat you are consuming. I just don’t. I've said "well done", "congratulations", "gosh, you've done so well" to the same person so many times, because I don't know what else to say to someone who gives an update. Practically every day.

To each their own but for the love of bread, I wish the carb-free followers would realise that there are people in this world who will not give up fries. And we are most certainly not interested in their preaching of the importance of adding cream to coffee.
