Not even the late British monarch could resist the charms of the Hollywood superstar.

According to insiders, Queen Elizabeth was so disappointed that she did not get to meet Tom Cruise during a platinum jubilee event in June that she invited him for tea at Windsor Castle where they reportedly “really hit it off”.

“The queen let it be known she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant,” a source told British newspaper The Times.

“So he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him. Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together.”

Her Majesty even allowed the 60-year-old, who was filming his latest Mission: Impossible film in the UK at the time, to land his helicopter on the castle grounds – a privilege only reserved for a few.

They got on so well Tom was invited to return for lunch, but sadly the monarch died before that could happen.

Tom had only praise for the queen, who reigned for 70 years before she passed away on 8 September this year, aged 96.

“She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion.

“What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always, as a kid, seeing photos of her.”

Since their meeting, Tom has begun gearing up to go where no actor has gone before – space.

The star, who is known for pushing the envelope when it comes to doing his own adrenaline-fuelled stunts, is reportedly planning to perform a spacewalk for an upcoming film with an eye-popping budget of $200 million (R3,6 billion).

Universal chairwoman Donna Langley confirmed as much, telling the BBC, “We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him taking a rocket to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

She described Tom’s character as “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth”.
