So, how can the Covid-19 vaccine help you?
A vaccine works to give you immunity against Covid-19. This means that it will help your body recognise the virus, and also teach your body how to fight it. There is no active Covid-19 virus inside the vaccine so it cannot give you the disease. And the more people get vaccinated, the less the virus can spread in our communities. – via www.gov.za
Some stats to celebrate
We kick-started the fight against the spread of Covid-19 on a high note and reached the first vaccination milestone early with the Sisonke Programme – which focused on healthcare workers.
The rapid rollout of the vaccine to healthcare workers was a critical first step in the three-phase national vaccination rollout plan:
Phase 1: Healthcare workers (target of 1,2 million)
Phase 2: Starting with those over 60 years, 50, 40, 30 – as well as those in congregate settings which include: old-age homes and other institutions. The majority of those with comorbidities, including undiagnosed comorbidities were set to be covered during this phase (targeted 16,6 million)
Phase 3: The remaining population of people older than 18 years, targeting over 22,6 million.
To facilitate vaccination, as of 15 July 2021, the department of health officially opened the vaccine-registration system, allowing people aged 35 years and older to register to vaccinate from 1 August. To increase demand for the vaccine by this cohort, vaccination sites allowed people to register and vaccinate immediately through walk-ins, though priority was given to the older age groups, 50 years and above.

Following the 1,5 million people over the age of 35 years who registered to vaccinate – the numbers are projected to surpass 3 million by the end of this month – with a target of 300 000 people per day, the possibility for large-scale vaccination was increased.
Phase 3 of South Africa’s vaccine rollout will open for people aged 18 to 34 from 1 September 2021, as revealed by President Cyril Ramaphosa – much to the delight of those who fall in the category.
This means people of this age group will register for a life-saving vaccine immediately from 1 September 2021 using various registration methods, including onsite registration or walk-ins.
This will be accomplished by increasing vaccination sites, improving the registration system and boosting vaccination capacity over weekends.
What you need to know
Only healthcare workers who have completed the Knowledge Hub Vaccinator course or equivalent will be able to give the vaccinations – and priority will be given to scheduled or unscheduled people over age 50.
All vaccine-eligible people are urged to prioritise other methods of vaccine registration, including online registrations, to avoid long queues at vaccination sites:
