Nigeria reports 2 new Ebola infections, outbreak spreads

Kano - Two more people have been infected with Ebola in Nigeria, the authorities say, bringing the total number of cases there to nine as the outbreak spreads through West Africa.

All the infected patients are in hospital in Lagos, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu announced late on Sunday.

Two people have died of Ebola in Nigeria.

The country has banned the transport of corpses across national and state borders, in an attempt to halt an outbreak that has killed almost 1 000 people in West Africa.

People who die of Ebola will have to be buried in the community where they die. The ruling will especially affect the families of Nigerians dying in Ebola-affected Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone, the health ministry said.

Another West African country, Senegal, has meanwhile reported its first suspected Ebola case, in the nation's north. The patient is a 27-year-old Malian.

A total of 1 779 Ebola cases and 961 deaths have been reported so far, according to the WHO.

There is no cure for Ebola, which is transmitted through blood and other body fluids. There is no proven vaccine against the disease.
