OVERVIEW: Kenya hotel siege over… all attackers eliminated, says President Kenyatta

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta says 14 people were killed in Tuesday's attack on a hotel complex in the capital and he declared the operation to neutralise the attackers is over.

Kenyatta did not say on Wednesday how many attackers were involved.

He urged Kenyans to "go back to work without fear", saying the east African country is safe for citizens and visitors.

Zim leader calls for 'calm, peace' amid violent protests over fuel hikes

Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for "calm and peace" as the southern African country entered its third day of protests over the recent fuel hikes.

Writing on his Facebook page, the president said he was "deeply saddened" by the events in the southern African country which have led to several deaths.

The president described the ongoing protests as violence and vandalism that had not place in the southern African country.

Zimbabwe police armed with AK-47 rifles arrested Evan Mawarire, an activist and pastor, from his home in the capital, Harare, on Wednesday as a crackdown grew over protests against dramatic fuel price hikes in the economically shattered country. He was clutching a Bible when police bundled him into their car.

Mawarire organised what became nationwide anti-government protests in 2016 against mismanagement and then-President Robert Mugabe's long stay in power. "They are alleging that he incited violence through Twitter and other forms of social media in the central business district," said Beatrice Mtetwa, the pastor's lawyer.

Zimbabwe anti-government protest strike enters 3rd day

Streets are deserted in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, Wednesday as a general strike continues for a third day to protest the government's decision to more than double the price of fuel.

Lawyers for activist Evan Mawarire say armed police are surrounding his house in Harare. Mawarire in 2016 organised the ThisFlag campaign that sparked a string of nationwide anti-government protests.

Zimbabwe's largest telecoms company, Econet, has sent text messages to customers saying it has been forced by the government to shut down internet service. "The matter is beyond our control," said the statement.

Nairobi attack sparked by Trump's Jerusalem move - Al-Shabaab

The Al-Shabaab militant group said it carried out the deadly attack on a Nairobi hotel and office complex in retaliation for US President Donald Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital., the SITE monitoring group said.

The group said in a statement picked up by SITE that its fighters stormed the DusitD2 complex on instructions by Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

"It is a response to the witless remarks of the US president, Donald Trump, and his declaration of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel."
