Mugabe's 'involvement' with MDC 'causes cracks within the party' – report

Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe's alleged involvement with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance has reportedly caused divisions within the opposition party - a few days after it was defeated in a disputed election last week.

Mugabe held a surprise press conference at his home - just a day before elections kicked off -  at which he stunned observers, and called for voters to reject Zanu-PF party, his former party, reported AFP.

He even hinted that he could vote for opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

Twenty-seven supporters of Zimbabwe's MDC opposition party were released on bail on Tuesday over alleged violence at last week's post-election protests that triggered a security crackdown.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, declared winner of the historic first elections since the downfall of Robert Mugabe, has vowed to protect rights since his re-election but the opposition say their members have been targeted.

"We are very pleased obviously that they have been released," defence lawyer Denford Halimani told AFP following the hearing at Harare's magistrates court.

Zim soldiers, gunmen, 'beating and harassing' opposition, group claims

Zimbabwean security forces and unidentified gunmen have beaten and harassed dozens of people in a crackdown on the political opposition following a disputed election, Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.

The allegation contradicts assertions by the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa that it has abandoned the state-sponsored violence and intimidation associated with the rule of former leader Robert Mugabe. It comes after soldiers last week opened fire on rioters, protesters and bystanders in Harare, an opposition stronghold. Six people were killed.
