Zimbabwe leader angered by video of security forces' abuse
Zimbabwe's president on Monday said he was "appalled" by a televised report showing abuses by security forces in a continuing crackdown.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, on his official Twitter account, said was unhappy at the video, broadcast by Sky News, showing security forces hitting a man who had been arrested. Mnangagwa said he "instructed that the individuals behind this be arrested."
Angry protests against the government's drastic fuel price hikes provoked a harsh crackdown by police and military in which 12 have been killed and 300 wounded, scores by gunshot wounds, according to doctors and rights groups.

France's Macron to press Egyptian president on human rights
French President Emmanuel Macron is to hold talks on Monday with his Egyptian counterpart in Cairo, saying beforehand that he wants to boost ties with the Mideast country in the fight against terrorism but also use the visit to encourage better respect for human rights.
Macron, who is heading a large delegation on a three-day trip to the Arab world's most populous country, said he wants to "pursue a truthful dialogue on topics of public freedoms and human rights" — an area he feels Egypt has not progressed enough on since he raised it with officials earlier in his mandate.

Zimbabwe fire brigade on frontline after protests
Zimbabwe's widely respected fire brigade usually tackles house fires and traffic accidents, but it became a symbol of the regime during anti-government demonstrations that turned into violent looting and arson.
The crews were blocked from reaching blazes by protesters who erected barricades of burning tyres across roads, while crowds pelted their trucks with stones.
"It was vicious," said Richard Peterson, the fire brigade chief of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city. "We were just trying to save lives.
"We had never been stoned before, and we felt overwhelmed. We had to get police escorts and that made our response times too slow - often an hour or two instead of 10 minutes.

10 dead in 'terrorist attack' in Burkina Faso: security source
Ten people were killed on Sunday in northern Burkina Faso in a "terrorist attack", according to a security source and a local elected official.
"Around 10 armed individuals in the morning carried out a terrorist attack in the village of Sikire," which left "10 dead and two seriously wounded," a security source told AFP.

Kasai bishops endorse election of DRC's Tshisekedi
Some Catholic bishops in the Kasai region of Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday endorsed the election of Felix Tshisekedi as the new president, splitting with bishops in the rest of the country.
A statement issued by six of the eight bishops in Kasai, Tshisekedi's home region, acknowledged his disputed win in the December 30 presidential poll.
Sunday's statement from the Kasai bishops hailed Tshisekedi's election as a step towards democracy and social progress for all people in Democratic Republic of Congo.
