US doctor who survived Ebola honored for service in Liberia

A Massachusetts doctor who was among a handful of Americans treated and cured of Ebola in 2014 is being recognised for his work in Liberia through the deadly epidemic.

Dr Richard Sacra will be honoured on Thursday in New York by the African Mission Healthcare Foundation. The organisation is giving Sacra $500 000 to expand programs at the hospital he works at in Monrovia, Liberia.

The 56-year-old physician says the money will help ELWA Hospital build an intensive care unit, increase training for family doctors and install solar panels.

Sacra contracted Ebola while delivering babies at the hospital in August 2014. He was treated in Nebraska but returned to Liberia within months to continue his work.

The West Africa epidemic was the largest ever Ebola outbreak, claiming more than 11 000 lives over two years.
