Youths held over 'black chicken gift' to prime minister – report

Three Guineans were reportedly arrested over the weekend after they tried to give Prime Minister Kassory Fofana a live black cock.

The incident happened as Fofana was addressing supporters at a youth centre in the eastern town of Kankan in Guinea, according to BBC.

The three youths have since been released from police custody.

The arrests were no surprise to authorities as many Guineans regarded black cocks as a bad omen and saw the gift as malicious intent.

According to TheWitness, in some African communities a headless chicken hanging on your front door or gate was also believed to be a bad omen.

“If the chicken is black, it would be even worse,” the report said.

Black chickens have also been a hit in Zimbabwe with people in the community of Mutare believing they were useful in job protection spells, reported DailyNews.
