Zanu-PF salary bill 'shoots up after ex-ministers deployed to party HQ' – report

Zimbabwean ruling Zanu-PF's salary bill has reportedly "increased substantially" following a decision by the party to reassign former cabinet ministers to its headquarters in Harare.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, several ministers who did not make the cut into President Emmerson Mnangagwa's new cabinet, were deployed to the party's headquarters on a full-time basis.

Zanu-PF’s secretary for information and publicity Simon Khaya Moyo was quoted as saying that at least 11 departments of the party would now be managed by full-time employees who included ex-ministers.

But, according to Daily News, the re-assigned ex-ministers were set to cost the ruling party a fortune, as they were expected to receive salaries and benefits that were equivalent to government ministers.

Zanu-PF insiders said the party would face difficulties in paying the former ministers as its business ventures were in a state of decay.

Observers also said that the party would likely use its close links to the state coffers to bankroll its projects.

Khaya Moyo, however, dismissed the claims saying the party’s businesses were thriving and it was making money from subscriptions.

"We have many projects and subscription from all over the country which runs into millions. The truth is the party has its own funding. We have been funding ourselves and paying our workers all these years. It would, however, not be right for me to comment on what they will be getting, that is a private matter," Moyo was quoted as saying.
