Alluring aromas, delectable dishes, mouthwatering meals – the cook-off between the 12 finalists vying for the position DRUM Food Ambassador was a feast to tantalise even the most critical taste buds – but there could be only one winner.

The judges – celebrity chefs Zola Nene and Mogau Seshoene (best known as The Lazy Makoti), Capsicum cooking school lecturer Chef Ukhonaye Mconi and SA Pork’s Marieta Human – had a tough time choosing the winner as they tasted the starters, mains and desserts presented by the 12 contestants.

The final cook-off took place at Capsicum Culinary Studio in Rosebank and SA Pork CEO Johann Kotze said, "An event like this brings people together and from 159 entries to 12 finalists, I know that all of them have a chance to change the spaces around them. Everyone has the capacity to change their world."

Later Johann was delighted to announce Liziwe Matloha as the winner of the sought-after award.

Liziwe created three dishes, which the judges said were “exquisite", “creative” and “delicious”.

Liziwe wins a year contract worth R100 000 and will create recipes for DRUM’s print and digital platforms. Speaking after victory, she said, “I was so relaxed throughout the competition and I told everyone that I am here for fun and that I am not worried about winning at all but here I am."

"I am so grateful and I am so thankful, I can't believe it. I don't know what my family is going to say. Thank you Drum Magazine and Pork SA."

Liziwe Matloha also took home the reader’s choice awards after receiving more than 20 000 votes from DRUM audiences, winning R5 000 from SA Pork.

All of the finalists also received a cash prize from SA Pork to reward them for making it so far in the competition.

It was wonderful to partner with SA Pork to find a talented young black chef, DRUM editorial director Charlene Rolls says. “It’s always been our goal to empower and uplift and this competition has identified so many talented young cooks – I can only hope this is just the start of a fantastic food journey for them. I can’t wait to see what Liziwe comes up with in the kitchen in the next 12 months.”
