A young boy was taken into custody and charged with murder after shooting a couple in their home.

On Friday 15 March, New Hampshire Police were called to a home in Belknap County in the US to respond to a shooting, Fox News reports

When police officers entered the home, they found Lizette Eckert (50) dead from a single gunshot wound and her husband, James (48), alive but in a critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

James was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead, according to the New York Post.

After searching the area for two hours, local police took an 11-year-old boy into custody, according to assistant attorney general Geoffrey Ward.

The youngster was charged with one juvenile count of second-degree murder and attempted murder at the time of his arrest.

It’s unclear whether police have upgraded the charges following James’ death, the Daily Mail reports.

The motive for the murders isn’t yet known.

Friends and family of the couple, who have three children, say they were active churchgoers at St Katharine Drexel Parish.

“They were here every week. They were very devout, very faithful parishioners,” Reverend Robert Cole said. “Beautiful people.”
