Artist turns tin cans into geometric masterpieces – using just his fingers!

accreditation

This talented artist creates incredible geometric patterns on aluminium tins using nothing but his hands.

Noah Deledda's mind-bending works seem machine created, but the flawless designs are actually shaped and polished entirely by hand.

On average it takes 40-year-old Noah between 15 and 30 hours to complete each of the unique works.

His finished masterpieces currently sell at between $2 000 (R29 000) and $3 000 (R43 500).

The process, he said, starts with ordinary, store-bought aluminium tins, which are then scratched and polished to reveal the mirror-like finish beneath.

The design is then dented into the empty tin by hand, with Noah using only his fingers and thumbs to elevate common incidental gestures – scratch, dent and crease – to a form of art.

"The most fascinating aspect of working with this medium is the discovery process that’s involved,” Noah explained.

"Every design is discovered through a process of trial and error, and every discovery bolsters my fascination."

Since he began working with this medium in 2014, Noah, who was raised in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA, has created around 50 distinct designs, of which roughly 30 have been published.

Noah says he plans to continue working with this medium for the rest of his career.

"The designs featured in my work are inspired mostly by my interest in geometry. The overlap of maths and art has been an endless source of inspiration for me.”
