I’m a mother of three children, one daughter and two sons, and I want to make sure things are fair when I die. I want to write a will but I don’t know where to start. I can’t afford to go to a lawyer, so what can I do?

It’s good that you’re looking out for the best interests of your children while you’re still alive and can do something about it. There are many options to secure the future of your children and make sure there aren’t any disputes. Legal aid organization ProBono.org offers help and awareness on legal issues. You can contact them on 011-339-6080. They have an annual “free will week” when they’ll help you to draw up a will free of charge. I suggest you call them to find out when it’s happening this year. Another option is to contact the Legal Resource Centre on 031- 301-7573, or find a branch in your area, and ask for help drawing up a will. You can also ask your bank if it can help in this regard – many banks help to draw up wills and they’ll keep them for you for a minimal annual fee.
