An Italian nurse has been accused of strangling his student doctor girlfriend.

The accused, Antonio De Pace (28), is said to have confessed to the murder of girlfriend Lorena Quaranta (27), Metro reports. Lorena was found dead in their apartment earlier this week.

The couple were both employed at a Sicilian hospital in Italy and had been drafted in to help fight the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen more than 115 000 being infected in their country.

Antonio is said to have called the police department to tell them he had murdered his girlfriend. When officers arrived, he was found on the floor of his apartment by officers, after he slashed his wrists.

It’s been claimed the victim’s colleagues helped save Antonio’s life when he was taken to the hospital by paramedics.

Police were reportedly stunned when Antonio admitted to killing her.

“I killed her because she gave me coronavirus,” he told police according to the Daily Mail.

Italian authorities are said to be doubtful about the accused’s story as indications from tests suggest that neither of the two had contracted the virus.

Lorena will be awarded her medical degree posthumously as a tribute to her service.

A few days before her tragic death, the doctor took to social media to make people aware of the tough situation healthcare workers find themselves in.

“Now more than ever we need to demonstrate responsibility and love for life,” Lorena wrote on Facebook. “You must show respect for yourselves, your families and the country.

“You must think and remember those that dedicate their lives daily to looking after our sick.”
