Kind-hearted Australian paramedics granted this terminally ill man his final wish: an ice cream sundae
When paramedics Kate and Hannah, from the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), heard it had been days since Gold Coast resident Ron McCartney (72) hadn’t eaten, they wanted to grant him one last wish, reports BBC.
Ron’s wife, Sharon, said that Ron had barely eaten for the past two days.
“If you could eat anything, what would it be?” the paramedics asked Ron. To which Ron replied, “A caramel sundae.”
Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) shared a picture on 4 August of Ron on their Facebook page, happily eating his sundae in the ambulance.
“We’ve been left humbled and tinged with sadness after receiving a message of gratitude that underlines an often unseen aspect of patient care; the caring,” they wrote.
Ron’s daughter Danielle Smith expressed her gratitude on social media, saying that her dad enjoyed it and it was the last thing he was able to eat by himself.
“Mom and I can’t thank the QAS enough for all the help and compassion you’ve all given us”, she added.
The post garnered more than 13 000 likes and 1 600 shares with loads of people commenting, reports AsiaOne.
“It’s too easy to focus on the light and sirens aspect of the job, but this is what the real meaning of the job is,” wrote one Facebook user.
Last year the QAS crew also granted a dying woman’s wish, which was to see the beach for the last time.
Ron had a 17-year battle with pancreatic cancer and died in palliative care on 1 September.
