A 10-year-old girl was charged with murder after she allegedly “stomped” on a baby’s head, killing him.
The young girl, whose name hasn’t yet been released, appeared in Chippewa County Court in Wisconsin in the US on Monday 5 November and was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of a six-month-old boy, WHNT reports.
The girl, who was placed in foster care earlier this month, allegedly dropped the baby and panicked when he started crying, district attorney Wade Newell told the court.
“She stated she was holding the child and that’s when she dropped [him],” Newell said.
“The child hit its head on the footstool and then started crying. She panicked and didn’t know what to do and didn’t want to get into trouble. She proceeded to stomp on the six-month-old’s head.”
The boy was then airlifted to St Paul’s hospital where he was later pronounced dead on 1 November, NBC News reports.
"Later that afternoon the sheriff's department received a call from medical personnel, a doctor, attending this youth and indicated that his belief was that the injuries sustained by the six-month boy weren’t an accident,” Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk from Chippewa County sheriff's department said.
According to Star Tribune, the girl, who was accompanied by her biological parents, sobbed throughout her bail hearing. Her bond was set at $50 000 (around R700 000).
While she appeared with her biological parents in court, it’s alleged the girl was with her foster parents – who run the daycare – at the time of the incident.
