Ever wondered which holiday destination enjoys the most traffic on social media? 

International travel agent Big 7 Travel researched destination trends on Instagram and has now released a list of the countries of which people share the most pics on Instagram.

South Africa boasts in fifth place on the list, with awesome pictures that impressed the judges so much that they decided to also publish a list of the top destinations in country.

The agency based its list among others on hash tags shared, readers votes and a panel of experts’ top 50 places everyone has to share on Instagram.

We take a look at the 10 destinations in SA you definitely have to put on your list.

1 Bloubergstrand

Capetonians will be delighted that Bloubergstrand came out tops among destinations in SA on Instagram. This picturesque beach is much sought after by surfers.

2 Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve

South Africa’s Big Five can roam freely here as there are no barriers between this reserve and the bordering Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga. 

3 Jacaranda trees, Pretoria

Pretoria isn’t called the Jacaranda City for nothing. The city’s iconic Jacaranda trees are responsible for bathing the city in colour. This draws scores of visitors every year between September and November when the trees are in flower.

4. Mandela Capture Site in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal

The exhibition at the site where former president Nelson Mandela was apprehended by police in August 1952 illustrates how Madiba influenced the identity of our country.

The uMngeni Municipality has plans to establish an amphitheatre, museum and art centre at the monument to boost tourism. 

 5 Orlando Towers, Soweto

The Orlando Towers in Soweto is a place the adventure-minded wouldn’t want to miss. Bridge jumping, paintball and sky diving are some of the activities sure to set the adrenaline pumping.

6 Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River Canyon, now known as the Motlatse River Canyon, situated 160 km from Mbombela, is the world’s third largest canyon and 25 km long

It’s a hot favourite of nature lovers, also as a wedding venue.

7 Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

Lions Sands Ivory Lodge on the Sabie River is paradise for people who wish to enjoy a close-up experience of wild life.

8 Stellenbosch

While Stellenbosch in the Western Cape may be one of the oldest towns in the country, it’s better known for its youthful “spirit”, engendered among others by the local university, wine routes, art galleries and sought after restaurants. 

9 Lion’s Head, Cape Town

This popular hiking route is known for its distinctive cliff side next to Table Mountain.

From here visitors can enjoy striking views of the natural splendour of the Atlantic Ocean on the one side, and the city and Table Mountain on the other side. 

The hike can be challenging in places, but the breathtaking views from Lion’s Head on a sunny day certainly spurs you on to reach the top.

10 Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal 

Starting at 1 544 metres above sea level and rising to 2 876 metres, Sani Pass really (literally!) stands head and shoulders above other mountain passes as one of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

The pass provides the only direct link between the towns of Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal and Mokhotlong in Lesotho. It draws visitors from around the world but it’s advisable to exercise caution in this area.
