LOCAL swimmer Monica Botha recently participated in the 2018 eThekwini Speedo Provincial Championships at the Kings Park Swimming Pool.
This competition saw five days of KZN level three, SA National junior qualifiers, and senior swimmers convene at the park’s outdoor,
25-meter pool.
On all five days, Monica competed in various events.
She earned three gold medals, the 200 back SA National Junior Qualifying Time, and a personal best (PB) on the first day. On the second day, she earned one gold medal, two silver and two PBs. On day three, Monica went home with two bronze medals and two new PBs. On day four, she achieved one gold, one silver and two PBs. On the final day she achieved two gold and two PBs.
With a total of 252 points, Monica was named as the Top 11 and under female point scorer. The top point scorers in the respective age groups will receive their rewards during 2019 at a special KZN Aquatics awards evening.
Out of five days, 13 heats, and 13 finals, Monica’s achievements included:
• Provincial (KZN) Women 11&U 200 SCM Freestyle record in 2:15:57
• Women 11&U Top point scorer with 252 points
• Won gold across all freestyle events: 50,100, 200, and 400
• Seven gold
• Four silver
• Two bronze
• SANJ qualifying time in 200 SCM Backstroke — totals four qualifying times for SA Junior Nationals 2018 (100, 200 Freestyle, 100 & 200 Backstroke)
• 10/13 events personal bests (PBs)
Monica took a break from the pool for the festive season and will continue preparation for her first SA National Junior Championships in March 2019, two weeks after her 12th birthday.
