Attack on council staff wrong

The attack of council workers while on duty in Gugulethu has been severely criticised.

The workers, from the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department, were ambushed while on duty more than two weeks ago at the corner of Govan Mbeki and Link Roads.

One of the workers was critically injured and spent time in hospital, while three others received minor injuries. A City vehicle was damaged, while another was set alight.

The incident has been highly condemned by the City. And it has set aside a R5 000 reward for anyone with information that can lead to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

CPF chairperson Sonwabile Magida said the situation was worrying and “alarming”.

“As the Gugulethu Community Police Forum, we condemn any kind of crime, and we urge the law to take its course against these perpetrators,” he said.

Magida said Gugulethu featured prominently in the latest crime figures with murder and car hijackings on the increase.

Magida said these incidents do not do good for the community.

Urging all community stakeholders to come on board to fight crime, Magida said:

“Crime is not a police responsibility only. The City’s law enforcement, the department of justice and the community at large, must join forces to curb crime in our communities,” he urged.
