Gogo hopes for a good yuletide

After Khayelitsha pensioner Nozamile Lungena welcomed National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbethe to her two-roomed shack last Friday, she is hopeful that she could soon move into a brick house.

Lungena(82) who shares her two-room shack with three grandchildren, says she has been battling to get a proper house because she has no title deed.

She inherited the plot from her late mother. Attempts to change the ownership(of the plot) have been to no avail. She says she has no money to do the transfer and has seen all her neighbours- most of whom moved into the area after her- receive brick-houses.

“I need money to do the transfer and where am I supposed to get that money from, because I’m a pensioner,” she said.

She added that she needs a new house because when it is raining, the shack floods.

In what could be a turning point in her life’s struggles, Lungena received a surprise visit from the Mbete, who was in the company of Ward 90 Councillor Lulekwa Jali and various government officials.

Mbete said an urgent intervention was needed, calling on Jali to work with other people to ensure Lungena moves into a house before Christmas.

She called for the matter to get speedy action.

“She must spend Christmas in her new house I don’t want to see these tears again,” said Mbete.

Jali said she has been trying for a long time to assist even before she became a councillor. She promised that once the title deed is changed a house will be built for her. “After today’s visit from Baleka I am hopeful that I will not die on this filth and I will feel human again,” added Lungena.
