Karatekas of the Strand Kyokushin Karate Club are hard at work preparing for their first tournament of the year.
Mzwamadoda Sopazi, founder of the club, invited a special guest from Khayelitsha to train the students. He said: “We have really been focusing and training hard since January, as the students will participate in a provincial tournament where there will likely be sponsors looking to spend their money to support local clubs.”
The club performed well last year, with karateka Mzuvukile Zilindile named the Western Cape’s top u-21 student. He also represented the province at the national championships, where he finished third overall. “We want to build on last year’s success and work harder,” Sopazi said. We are capable of being the best dojo in the Western Cape.”
Guest trainer Sandile Gubevu said the dedication of the young students could lead them to glory. “Karate is not about talent, but discipline and dedication,” he pointed out. “They have shown me just that, and I believe if they carry this spirit with them they will win.”
Zilindile is looking forward to giving his all to reap the rewards this year. “I want to win every tournament I participate in this year,” he said.
“We lack funds. There is a lot we could do, like tournaments for our community, to show them what we do. We need support.”
Sopazi invited anyone interested in joining to come to the Skwenkwe White Gymnasium at the Lwandle Sports Complex. “Even if you just want to find out more about karate, you are welcome to visit the dojo,” he said.
“There is so much people of all ages can learn here, and we can help you live a healthy lifestyle. Parents are also invited to bring their children after school to pursue a great extramural activity. We have had many success stories of children becoming disciplined after joining the club.”
