The Ajax Community Scheme programme visits disadvantaged primary schools in the Western Cape in an effort to empower the youth with knowledge and opportunities in sport.
Every week, they go to about six schools where they run a life-skills-programme which includes the kick and learn, urban soccer and hot-spot programmes.
They tackle a class each in Grade 5 and Grade 7 a day.
The kids are handed files with information reiterating the knowledge passed on that day, so that they can pass it on to others.
They also receive goody bags containing Ajax Cape Town merchandise.
According to Siphelele Koniwe, coordinator of the scheme, this helps build the relationship between the youth and the police.
The programme runs between Mondays and Wednesdays.
“For the first 30 minutes, the coach tackles issues such as the dangers of using drugs, nutrition, fire safety and HIV/Aids. Then, they are taught technical skills on the field, either in netball or soccer, depending on what sport the school offers,” said Koniwe.
Last week they visited Isiphiwo, Sivuyiseni, Kuyasa, Chuma, Luleka and Mthawelanga primary schools in the Harare area of Khayelitsha.
The scheme will also be visiting primary schools in the Kraaifontein in the near future.
The Kick and Learn Programme focuses on passing knowledge by delivering life skills in a variety of topics.
The Urban Soccer Programme involves the coach visiting the school in the after care programme.
The Hot Spot Programme focuses on fighting crime by collaborating with the area police to bring the kids together.
