Two young cyclists from Khayelitsha, who recently took part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour (CTCT), will be jetting off to the world’s biggest cycle tour in France this year.
Vuyo Mavuya (22) and Vuyolwethu Nkomo (18) will get a chance to watch some of the stages of this year’s Tour De France.
Mavuya finished the CTCT in a time of 2:46:32 (only four minutes later than the winner) and was placed in 49th place overall.
Unfortunately his teammate crashed and was unable to finish the race.
Mavuya said he is excited about going to France where he will meet new people and learn a lot of different things that will help him in his cycling career.
“It is every cyclist’s dream to go to the Tour De France because it is the biggest stage for any cyclist,” he said.
He said this means that his family is taking his cycling serious because he would not have had a chance to go overseas if he was doing something else.
However, he said they will not be participating in any of the stages of the tour but they will take part in one race before the tour.
The trip for the two was made possible by Disfruta Sports Tours - a company that specialises in sports travel for endurance athletes attending major endurance sporting events in Europe.
