A South African Netball player from Khayelitsha is giving back to local communities by hosting coaching clinics for aspiring netball stars.
Phumza Maweni, who now plays professional netball in Australia, said whenever she is back home she wants to give back by sharing her experiences with the players and coaches from different townships in Cape Town. The players usually come from Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, Langa, Gugulethu and they are from different age groups. “I started hosting these clinics last year. The one we just had is the second one we have hosted,” she said.
Maweni said they want to build relationships with the players from an early age.
She said another thing that makes the clinics important is the fact that they also teach them new rules because the rules of the game change all the time.
She hopes more people will join the clinics, because not a lot attended before even though it is free.
Maweni said she would love to have her own academy one day so she can help make professional netball players out of the girls from the townships and hopefully they can one day be like her.
She said she is planning on hosting a big netball tournament next year when she returns home.
