Silukhanyo’s big brag
Atightly contested game saw Silukhanyo Primary School steal the show by beating ACJ Phakade Primary 1-0 om a girls’ soccer match at Lwandle astro on Thursday 9 August.
The two primary schools seemed to be evenly matched as they went to half-time with the score goalless.
Both teams were very defensive and there were few goal-scoring opportunities created as the game was always concentrated on the midfield.
But a few minutes after the start of the second half, Hlelokuhle Fulathela (12), who put in a player of the match performance broke the deadlock.
A route ball from the back, found the skilful and fast-paced Hlelokuhle in the centre.
She outran the defender close to her and calmly put the ball into the net with ease.
This was to be the only goal of the game, as both teams reverted to more defensive tactics, much to the frustration of both coaches.
Hlelokuhle expressed great joy when the final whistle blew, giving her school the bragging rights as the winners over their peers. “I am very happy with today’s results. It means a lot to me,” she said. “ All the time I had played with boys paid off today.”
Tsepiso Letoaba, coach of the Silukhanyo team, believed the game was well balanced and was proud of his charges on the day.
“This was a tough match, where we learnt a lot as a team,” said the happy coach.
“But this also gives us an opportunity to work hard to rectify our mistakes. The games really showed the great potential our kids have for soccer as well,” he said..
Letoaba believed such games will also help revive a number of women’s teams in the area of Lwandle and surrounding areas.
Masixole Mbanjwa, coach of ACJ, said his team was happy as the game had been “good” for both teams.
He blamed the loss of his team on them not being used to playing finals, so they were not themselves on the day.
The games were organised by Lwandle Community Policing Forum to mark Women’s Day.
