The matric class of Simayene High School in Asanda Village know exactly what to expect this academic year thanks to a motivational morning hosted by the school last Tuesday (15 January).
The session aimed to prepare and encourage the Grade 12 learners mentally for their last year at high school. It saw some teachers share information and motivate the school’s matric learners.
Matric educator Kholeka Nyhila reminded the group of the short time they had to prepare academically. “This grade is very different from the other grades,” she said. “We should not be chasing you for work not submitted on time, because time is something we don’t have this year. The sooner you do your work, the more time you will have for revision.”
Simayene was the only school in the area to improve on its Grade 12 results. The 2018 matriculants achieved a pass rate of 69,9%, an increase from the 64,2% achieved by the class of 2017. However, the school failed to achieve its set goal of a 70% pass rate.
Educator Fenny Khambule urged the learners to refrain from using alcohol and drugs. “For the next 12 months, sacrifice your time and give it your all,” she said. “The night life is nice, but it won’t bring you good matric results, only sacrificing and studying will.”
After the session, 17-year-old Liviwe Nkonyane was motivated to focus on her studies this year. “This shows our teachers really care about us,” she said “We want to make them proud and improve the [school’s] results.”
Sixteen-year-old Imi Nama said: “I take home the encouragement from the teachers. I think we can be the first class of this school to achieve a 100% matric pass rate.”
According to school principal Monwabisi Matshoba, the motivation session was just the start of the school’s plans to prepare the Grade 12 learners. “We will soon give them proper analysis on how they performed last year and where they should focus their attentions,” he said.
“We will allow them to set quarterly targets, because we want them to produce the best results of all the classes we have had at this school.”
