Stars pull crowds on road safety

Langa High School was the venue for lessons on road safety last week, what with popular television actors taking centre stage, demonstrating to learners by performing a road safety industrial play.

Famous actors the likes of Uzalo’s Mxolisi, real name Nay Maps and Nokuthula Mabika, aka Thobile, from Muvhango, Phindile Gwala who plays Nonny, Raphael Griffiths, who plays Vusi and Senzo Radebe who plays Sthe, were the pull of the crowds on the day.

Asemahle Sodinga,17, a grade 10 learner, said she enjoyed the play and learnt a lot even though she knew about road safety.

“The actors came to teach us about something we know but it will stay with us because it was them telling us about it. It was fun listening to them teaching us about road safety,” she said.

Sodinga said she will also pass on the message to other young people who were not present.

Grade eight learner Chulumanco Mbana,14, said she was happy to see people she would normally see on television coming to teach them about something of importance.

Mbana said: “It is important for us to protect ourselves on the roads and I think because we were told by celebrities, it will stick in our minds”.

Road Traffic Management Corporation’s Keitumetse Mathiba said they are promoting road safety to young people because they want to change their behaviour on the roads.

She said they want to make road safety a lifestyle and the reason they brought celebrities is because young people look up to them so they will listen.

Western Cape’s department of Transport and Public Works Nokuzola Letselebe said they want young people to know how to use roads safely in Women’s Month.
