Although under fire, Ward 33 Councillor Sithembiso Mzobe has dismissed claims of bias levelled at him by a section of his constituency.
He said these claims were “baseless”.
He is accused of neglecting certain sections in his ward, including eThembeni and TR section, in Samora Machel.
On Friday, irate residents marched to his office demanding that he step down.
Singing revolutionary songs and brandishing placards, the residents accused Mzobe of being incompetent and marginalising certain areas. They gave him 21 days to respond or vacate the office.
TR resident Nomzamo Vimbi claimed Mzobe cared less about them.
“Since Mzobe took over, he never visited our area. We don’t have electricity and there are few communal taps,” said Vimbi.
Siyamcela Lali, a community leader in eThembeni, said in more than a decade of the place’s existence, very little has been done to develop the area.
“It’s a shame that our councillor never sets his foot in our area,” Lali said. “Both TR and eThembeni areas don’t have electricity and flushing toilets. There is high unemployment and crime rate in both areas.”
He alleged that Mzobe also excluded eThembeni residents from job opportunities in the ward. Mzobe accepted the memorandum but was quick to dismiss the claims. He said: “Both areas were on the private land.” But promised to forward their grievances to authorities.
