An Asanda Village accident victim is angered by alleged poor service delivery by officers of Lwandle police station.
She claims she has not received the necessary assistance from the investigating officer after she was struck by a truck while walking in Mbhele Street, Asanda Village on Monday 8 October. Nolusindiso Plam further alleges she was sent away from the station without getting any answers.
The 23-year-old and her young son were on their way back home from the shop when the 3-year-old toddler ran into the street. “I saw the truck approaching and immediately threw myself in the road to protect my son,” Plam explained.
After the accident, emergency services arrived on the scene along with the police. The ambulance personnel attended to Plam on the scene, and she was informed she would need further attention at hospital.
“The police allowed the truck driver to leave the scene and informed me that they had taken his details,” she recalled.
“They also said they would visit my house as soon as I was discharged from hospital, where I was treated for the broken arm and bruises sustained in the accident.”
Plam was discharged from hospital the following day. “I waited for the police to come to my home, but they never came,” she said, adding that she went to Lwandle Police Station after three days of waiting.
“But I was informed that the investigating officer was not available. When I went back to the station, the investigating officer was there, but I was again not helped.
“Instead, the officer informed me that it was my fault that I was hit by the truck.”
This Plam doesn’t contest, though. “I want the case number and accident report so I can claim from the Road Accident Fund,” she related.
When approached for comment on Plam’s allegations, Colonel Xolani Williams, station commander for Lwandle police, said: “The complainant must come to the station and open a case. We’ll investigate the allegations about the conduct against the investigating officer.”
