Weekend blitz nets suspects

Continuous efforts to address contact crimes in the Nyanga policing precinct have resulted in a number of arrests.

This past weekend six suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, rape, hijacking, possession of illegal firearms and stolen property.

Two suspects, aged 21 and 22, were arrested on Saturday for a case of murder which occurred last Thursday morning in Charles Ndaba Street, Samora Machel.

The pair had allegedly shot the deceased while he was smoking with them and another friend.

Through networking, the pair were arrested over the weekend. They are expected to appear in Athlone Magistrate Court this week on a charge of murder.

Ward 33 councillor Sthembiso Mzobe, said this was due to the fact that there are no police in Samora.

“If something happens in Samora, we have to contact police in Nyanga to come and assist. However, we are busy working on getting a police station,” he said.

He also added that the crime is caused by people from other areas coming into Samora to sell drugs.

Another two suspects, aged 25 and 26, were also arrested by officers of the Flying Squad on Friday in Zwelitsha, Nyanga East.

The officers were following up on information of a hijacked vehicle in Mowbray, which they found without occupants in the area of Zwelitsha.

While the officers were monitoring the vehicle, two suspects approached and walked to the vehicle and as they were opening the door, police pounced on them.

After car keys and gloves were found in their possession, they were duly arrested.

In another case, two suspects – aged 21 and 28 – also appeared in the Athlone and Wynberg magistrate courts facing charges of rape and assault, illegal possession of a firearm, ammunition and stolen property.

A 21-year-old was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition and presumably stolen property.

The police were on patrol when they noticed a suspicious looking vehicle in Thabo Mbeki and they stopped the vehicle and searched the driver and the vehicle and found a firearm and live rounds, various watches and a camera. The suspect is also charged with rape and assault.
