Hundreds of women from Khayelitsha and surrounds areas braved Saturday’s cold weather and took part in Area 2 Women’s Month Celebration, in the local Thusong centre.
As part of the event, women took part in a 6km fun walk from the centre to Walter Sisulu Road, into Spine Road, Mew Way, Steve Biko Road and back to the centre.
They also took part in a range of activities including Aerobics, Netball and a health talk.
One of the participants, Nandipha Sogilana, 32, said she enjoyed the walk. She added that it tested her fitness.
“I thought it was going to be hard since I’m not a person that normally trains,” she said. She added it was nice to be around other women, and trying out new things. She hopes to continue exercising.
Another participant, Phumla Ntongana, 35, said she felt great about being around other women and taking part in women activities. She said the Aerobics reminded her of her time at school.
Ntongana said Aerobics were a fun way of exercising. She hopes a lot of women will join gyms to boost their confidence.
Event organiser Thobeka Mwezo said since it was Women’s Month they (City of Cape Town) decided to host the event. She said they wanted to make it an annual initiative. She said they wanted to empower women and make them feel needed and important.
Mwezo said they also wanted to promote a Healthy lifestyle and to boost women confidence.
